Safe Motherhood & Facility Delivery
Plan, prepare, and reach skilled care
For years, The Mansaray Foundation's Birthing Bucket initiative has helped mothers prepare for childbirth and encouraged facility-based delivery.
Today, we are building on that foundation.
The Safe Motherhood & Facility Delivery Program transforms the birthing bucket from a stand-alone distribution item into one component of a comprehensive birth-preparedness pathway.
Help every mother plan, prepare, and reach a health facility for childbirth whenever possible.
Every Mother Has a Plan
Prepared before labor begins. Participating mothers can work with the TMF team and health-facility partners to develop a simple Safe Birth Plan.
A plan may identify:
- Expected delivery period
- Intended health facility
- Backup / referral facility
- Birth companion or support person
- Transportation plan
- Emergency transportation alternative
- Emergency contact information
- Financial or logistical barriers
- Supplies needed for delivery
- Postnatal follow-up plan
The Safe Birth Plan is part of the redesigned program model. It does not yet reach every pregnant woman in TMF's catchment area.
More Than a Bucket
The TMF Safe Motherhood Birthing Bucket remains an important and recognizable part of our work. But the bucket is no longer the program itself.
It is one part of a mother's broader preparation for safe childbirth, and helps reduce practical barriers associated with preparing for delivery and caring for herself and her newborn.
Contents may include locally appropriate:
- Maternal hygiene items
- Newborn clothing and wraps
- Newborn care items
- Maternal-health education materials
- Birth-preparedness information
- Other essentials identified with health-facility partners
Bucket contents are reviewed with local healthcare partners to ensure they remain practical, appropriate, and responsive to community needs.

Bridging Community and Clinical Care
TMF partners with trusted Traditional Birth Attendants as community partners who help connect pregnant women with the formal health system.
- 01Encourage antenatal care engagement
- 02Help women recognize when referral is needed
- 03Support the transition toward facility-based delivery
- 04Help maintain connection to postnatal care
This community partnership complements skilled clinical care. It does not replace skilled facility-based delivery.
Measuring what matters
Building on what works. TMF will continue reporting tangible services such as birthing buckets provided, while placing greater emphasis on what happens throughout the mother's journey.
Our goal is not simply to distribute more buckets. Our goal is to help more mothers reach skilled care prepared, informed, and supported.
